Filth & Splendourhttp://ravenuworld.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!E13AFC922AF08384!414.entry One of the best/worst things about clubbing is how <span style="font-style:italic">clubby</span> it is. I moved to London six-and-a-bit years ago blithely assuming I'd be able to lose myself in a city of millions. A very romantic fiction.<br><br>The first time I went out (to the Fridge, in Brixton, of all the godforsaken places) I bumped into my a bunch of guys who'd been at my housewarming in Wood Green two years earlier. It got so I could walk into any club and immediately encounter three or four people I knew well enough to not like. So I moved to Ibiza. <br><br><br>The flipside of this is that people you know and actually <span style="font-style:italic">like</span> crop up unexpectedly but at regular intervals. This week it's the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.myspace.com/FilthandSplendour">Filth & Splendour </a>boys (last seen at my favourite-ever New Year's eve party a couple of years back). If you haven't had the pleasure they're a couple of very gifted grafters with the sort of talent and charisma that sticks, even in as slippery a universe as "clubland." Since we bumped into each other they've released a fistful of tunes on <a target="_blank" href="http://http://www.myspace.com/massrecordings">Mass </a>and <a target="_blank" href="http://http://www.borntodance.com/">Born To Dance</a> Records, among others, and are notching up an impressive list of gigs and residencies like <a target="_blank" href="http://http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=23377174136">Itch </a>and <a target="_blank" href="http://http://www.dontstayin.com/parties/maximal">Maximal </a>at venues including the Cross, the Key (RIP), <a target="_blank" href="http://www.pachalondon.com">Pacha </a>and are planning their assault on the southern hemisphere with their first international tour this winter. <br><br>In two years time I'll probably be somewhere in the South American jungle and find out they're throwing a party in the next town. The world-renowned VJ team have taken their cut and paste to Downey's new superhero film, Iron Man. Which is rare for me, so I'm going to go with it. <p>This morning I woke up, stared up at the blue sky peeking through my curtain and felt very, very pleased indeed. Without really meaning to I started poking through the bits of Ikea furniture lying un-constructed in the second bedroom. I'm pleased to report that an hour or so later I became the proud owner of one fully assembled desk <em>and</em> red swivel chair. Created in concert with the new <a href="http://www.leecoombs.com/" target="_blank">Lee Coombs</a> compilation on <br><a href="http://www.lot49.co.uk/" target="_blank">Lot 49</a>. It's on the bouncy side but there are times you need something with a little more kick than Berlin techno delivers. And hammering together plywood with the butt of a screwdriver is one. Mostly because I'm too frazzled this week to be much <em>on</em> topic with anything. <p>Just so's you know. Living in Ibiza isn't year 'round glamour and wild nights. Nope. For me, at the moment, it's schlepping all my worldly goods across town in an increasingly battered Argos suitcase praying -- in the manner of pioneers approaching a difficult river crossing -- the wonky wheels hang on just a little longer. I could, of course, be sensible and either recruit friends to help out. Or at a push throw everything in a taxi (now they've finally stopped striking) but I'm stubborn. And I like doing things myself. It is naggingly reminiscent of everything from Suede to "fun" Blur to Echo & The Bunnymen and, perhaps most nearly, to their fellow Aussies The Go-Betweens... a big, lovely, gooey smorgasbord of pop references that is perhaps unoriginal but as welcome and comforting as lemonade on a hot day. The appeal of standing calf-deep in slurry sipping a warm, £6 pint of Strongbow while being repeatedly elbowed by a drunk 50-year-old warlock wanes fast. <p>Hence Europe being the new land of opportunity for festival goers. Not only is the mud'n'cider vibe less transparent, they do neat stuff like have <em>free</em> parties. Like <a href="http://www.tignesfest.com/" target="_blank">TignesFest</a> in (Tignes) France.
